Hey gents;
This is such a complex and fraught situation. Surely we can get a lot of mileage out of it. I'm curious about the U.S. government's support of Isreal from a Christian perspective. It's naive to think our interests are purely geopolitical. I've mistakenly stumbled into discussions about this perspective before with people(read devout Christians) who have an emotio/religious attachment to the situation. Can anyone explain the Christian perspective dispassionately?

The aforementioned "stumbled into" conversations usually involve the Jews being God's chosen people who it is Christian's obligation to nurture and protect. Israel and the Occupied Territories were promised to the Jews by God. It is my understanding(very poor) that aside from our geopolitical/ strategic interest in Israel's survival, there is a large and powerful religiously motivated lobby in U.S. politics(not just Jews) whose mission it is to preserve U.S. support for Israel........or I may be full of shit;^)

Alright, CriticalThinker checking in:
Do a web search on AIPAC, and you'll find some answers...
My generally cynical approach has always been to "follow the money". We're a capitalist society, more so now than ever, so there must be money (riches, power) involved.
Besides - if you look back over the past 60 years - Israel gave us (until our recent occupation of Iraq), our only reliable presence in the Middle East - combined with a culture that is "tolerable"...
And, Israel has always been a good "live" test site for our weapons systems.
And we certainly can't let the "heathens" (Arabs, Muslims, Palestinians, etc.) overrun Jerusalem - I mean, how many times has that happened in the last two millenia?
Please take note of the sarcasm dripping from your screen... :-)
The removal is going about as well as I expected. Glad Sharon is staying the course. What perturbs me is that the Israeli government didn't control the infiltration of protestors/dissidents from outlying areas into Gaza. Their presence and actions complicate things immeasurably.
